Below is an excerpt from a blog entry that I wrote in Spring of 2009 when I was living in the UK and was more severely disabled by ME. I was confined to bed most days and when I did go out I needed to use a wheelchair. My wheelchair allowed me to go places and do things that I previously had not been able to do. One of these things was to be able to travel again. This was written after a couple weeks holiday in France with my family. The photo is from that trip. We went on another fabulous a hike this past Sunday. This time it was to Los Cahorros de Monachil with a group from our village. I qualified it as preparation for walking the Camino de Santiago even though I am fairly certain we will not experience the same challenges in the physical terrain that this hike presented. But don’t misunderstand that fact as my saying it was not once again exactly what I needed.

For most of my life I held onto a gripping fear of heights. If there was the slightest hint of an edge from which I could fall (to my certain painful death no doubt) vertigo would take over as a full surge of adrenaline brought on tears and stole my legs from under me. My rational mind tried valiantly to talk my irrational self into all the logical strategies to compensate for and minimize this fear. The result of those efforts was my rational mind considering that irrational self had some very good arguments why being so afraid was not so irrational after all. Being afraid kept me safe. I happily stayed on terra firma with feet planted, no edges in sight. Looking up at all the crazy folks who dared risk certain painful death.
I’ve dropped hints and slipped it into conversations for some time now. In private its been a more openly celebrated ambition. At first I only dared to share the dream with a small intimate circle of support, until at last this past Sunday I tweeted and posted on my Facebook page:
3 years ago I could not walk 15 meters without severe pain.Today I begin to train for walking 125km on the Camino de Santiago. #miracle
